Our Mission

At Ensemo, we take the idea of seeding the future seriously. We believe that sustainable agriculture depends on the single seeds—and on the microbes that nature designed to support these seeds. Our aim, therefore, is to make these tiny living creatures our allies.

With our passion for microbial science and high-precision engineering, we are not just interested in innovation for innovation’s sake. Instead, we are driven by the conviction that biological seed treatment, when done right, can reduce the use of synthetic chemicals, strengthen crops from within, and restore balance between productivity and sustainability.

Our shared vision as a team:

To create tools and solutions that empower agriculture to work in tune with nature, not against it.

Our Story

Ensemo grew out of a simple but powerful question: If microorganisms are so effective, why are they still so hard to apply well in agriculture? This question brought together microbiologist Birgit Mitter and biotech engineer Nikolaus Pfaffenbichler at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. The founding of
Ensemo in March 2021 was a heartfelt reaction to their shared frustration with the gap between scientific potential and practical application.

Biologicals, they knew, could offer a more sustainable way forward. But their use in the field was limited by shelf life, sensitivity, and imprecise delivery.
Eventually, Birgit and Nikolaus realized that the solution was not just better microbes, but a better way to deliver them. Consequently, they developed a high-throughput industrial prototype which could be easily integrated into the production processes of the seed industry. SeedJection™ was finalized only one-and-a-half years later in November 2023.

With our team and purpose constantly evolving, our story keeps unfolding. Yet the foundation is clear: provide a technology that enables nature and lets agriculture grow from there.

Our Team

Ensemo consists of a multidisciplinary team of microbiologists, biotechnologists, agronomists, mechanical engineers, business developers, and visionaries. They combine deep domain expertise with the shared commitment to turn research into robust solutions and ideas into impact.

“Studying microbes is one thing. Turning them into reliable assets for agriculture is where the real complexity begins.”

Birgit Mitter
Co-Founder & CEO
Head of R&D

With over two decades of experience in microbial plant research, Birgit Mitter is the scientific mastermind behind Ensemo’s core technology. As CEO, she steers the company’s strategic development while overseeing all R&D activities (from concept to implementation). Birgit holds a PhD in microbiology from the Technical University of Graz. Prior to founding Ensemo, she led numerous research and industry projects at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. Her work resulted in over 60 peer-reviewed publications and five patents.

“The best solutions in agriculture are often mechanical. Good engineering gives structure to biological systems.”

Nikolaus Pfaffenbichler
Co-Founder & CTO
Head of
Engineering and Agronomy

Nikolaus Pfaffenbichler is the architect behind Ensemo’s technology. His innovative approach has been instrumental in developing SeedJection™. With a background in food and biotechnology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna and agronomic training from the HBLFA Francisco Josephinum, he bridges the gap between mechanical engineering and agricultural science. At Ensemo, he leads the development of high-throughput machinery that enables the precise injection of beneficial microbes into seeds.

“You can’t just hand innovation to the market. You need to translate it – into relevance, into trust, and into long-term value.”

Doris Gusenbauer
Head of Business Development

Doris Gusenbauer brings extensive experience in business development and technical sales management to Ensemo. With a degree in food and biotechnology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, she has worked internationally from Spain to the USA across industry and applied research sectors. In this role, she managed contract research projects, licensing, and technology transfer. At Ensemo, she is responsible for coordinating the market entry of SeedJectionTM and establishing strategic business partnerships.
